As I think all of my fellow Franciscans already know (?), I was thinking of holding a welcome party for the new Franciscans during Torrientation / Orientation week.
So here are my initial planning questions:
First, does anyone know what the Torrientation / Orientation schedule is? We need to find a time when the new Franciscans could do it without being overwhelmed.
Second, who will be in the area and able to come if the time works out? How hard would it be for the time to work out?
Finally, what do you think we should do? I was thinking something simple and non-exhausting, like taking them out for dinner (our treat). Does that sound like a good idea to the rest of you? (Input welcomed from those of you who won't be around, too.) Where do you think we should go? The Denny's, to connect with old tradition? Somewhere else? ...Lydia, another possibility, but one that I would in no way want to push on you or your family, would be to visit your house - would you and/or your mom want to play host to about sixteen random Torrey freshmen? We could also play Mafia or Apples to Apples if they wanted, but then again that might be too much during Torrientation - what do you think? Mostly I just want to be able to get to know them, tell some nervous Torrey freshmen that we love them, we're there for them, and it's not as scary as all that, give them advice if they want it, and give them a chance to relax as a group during a hectic week - whatever you think will help accomplish that.
Any help planning this would be really appreciated.
If no one posts a response to my question about the Torrientation schedule, I'll probably e-mail Janna in a few days and ask her, but I'd rather not bug Janna if someone already knows. :)
Can you believe there will be new Franciscans in less than a month? *cue warm fuzzy matronly feelings*

I just found the Orientation schedule online, so the question is now just whether anyone knows the Torrientation schedule. It looks like no day during Orientation is totally free from dinnertime options/requirements; but that's not to say there are no places we could possibly fit something in. We could have from 5:00-7:30 p.m. on Sunday the 22nd, for example, and all we would conflict with is a free commuter dinner. (Their SOS groups have them until 5:00, and they have a mandatory Community Commisioning at 7:30.) On Saturday they have a barbeque on Metzger Lawn for dinner if they want, but if they wouldn't mind missing that, we would have from 2:00 to 7:30 that day. (2:00 is when the chem placement exam ends, which I figure some of them will have to take.) We could also do lunch on Sunday if people are free and could make it over for a good length of time before getting them back to campus by 2:00. I think those are our only good options during Orientation.

Oh yeah, and feel free to respond about your personal schedule via e-mail...

I like your idea Melanie! Personally, I think Sunday the 22nd would be a good day. I'm pretty sure that I'll be moved in by then and I can hang around. I have a question though, how will you inform all the new freshman about this event? Were you planning on telling Janna so she could formally invite them on the Torrey chatter or email?
ReplyDeleteI was thinking I would probably e-mail Janna and either ask her to invite them or ask her for the names of the Francis seers and ask them to invite them. :)
ReplyDeleteI want very much to meet the new freshman and I think driving there is probably easier for me than for anyone else except maybe you, Melanie. Nicole may be visiting me that weekend since she's planning on driving down early before school and spending a few days at my place before class starts on the 25th. The 22nd is my birthday and I currently don't have plans, however I will need to talk with my family since they might have expectations about celebrating my birthday that night and especially since my brother will be leaving to go back to Biola shortly after that. As far as having them over to my house, again not my call, so I will post again when I know more.
ReplyDeleteSo I e-mailed Janna, and she thinks that getting to know them is a great idea... BUT... they reserve Torrientation solely for Torrey events and do not release the schedule to anyone... and she also can't tell me the names of the incoming group because it is protected by federal law. (I asked for the names of the seers, not the names of the group, but oh well.) So we will need to get word to them via Bubbs-becoming-Google-apps, and we should probably do it later. We could still try that Sunday evening... but you know, it might be better to do it a week into the semester instead. You see, I've thought about it some more, and, well, you remember how tiring Orientation was... Later on, homework will begin to swamp them, but one week in, it might be nice for them. Would you all be interested in an event one week into the semester, say, Friday evening? I know my school starts the same week as Biola, and I and Ellene and Nicole will be in school again, at least... but it shouldn't be too overwhelming yet. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteThat sounds good to me! Just let me know what the final time is and I will do my very best to be there! :)
ReplyDeleteSunday the 29th is a possibility, but not the 27th or 28th.
